Past Present Future Port Adelaide - Making History

The City ofPort Adelaide has undergone enor- mohs civic and cultural change throughout its long history. With foundations firmly planted in South Australia's working classes,"the Port" has steadily evolved,emerging from a period of decline in the 70s and 80s to be one ofthe leaders in community and environmental care. Our commtmity care programs aim to make the hves ofthe elderly and people with disabilities in Port Adelaide more comfortable witli initia tives such as respite service for carers. Similarly, Care and Housing for the Aged helps Aboriginal Elders secure accommoclation and support. Recently, the City ofPort Adelaide has appointed a committee ofresidents and staff to review and audit die facilities ofthe City enhir- k ing the disabled members ofour community ar^ not discriminated against. Other initiatives include HACC and Home Assist programs wliich protide practical home based support, while record numbers ofpassengers have used our Community Bus during the past year. This work - responding to our present resi dents' concerns about their quality oflife - is important to your Council,and \\'ill continue. We are also concerned about the enWronment. It is our aim to ensure a much greener futiu-e for the City witlt such greening initiatives as the Port Adelaide Kailyards, Snowden's Beach/Taperoo Wetlands,coastal re-vegetation and numerous tree plantings. These and other initiatives are detailed in Council's Emdronmental Health Management Plan. A New and Exciting Era With the future in mind,our Cit)' is moving into a new and exciting era. One issue which will have major effects on Port Adelaide is Local Government Reform. Based on the results ofthe communit)'survey. Port Adelaide and Enfield Councils have pro posed that they be amalgamated which promises to give additional potential for growth,eco nomic development and value for money rates. With all of tills in mind - a progressive range of improvements which will move us into the next century are detailed in this Annual Report - it is clear tliat Port Adelaide today, as in the past, will continue making history.
