Past Present Future Port Adelaide - Making History

o Proudly Remember The City of Port Adelaide is rightly proud of its past. Around us each day are reminders of this history, and of those who lived here before us. Historic buildings. Roads. Services. The port itself. Working together, often in times ofgreat hardship, those pioneers developed this region, carving it out ofa harsh landscape. The first village - or "Port Misery" as it was quickly dubbed by the early colonists - was desolate and isolated. Most dwellings were ofan extremely ramshackle nature, squalid tents and huts on the edge ofa .swamp. But over time, a bustling and tliriving community was created - a City ofsubstance. This is our heritage, our inheritance. The Port Adelaide Council believes this is a heritage which must be maintained - and built upon. Your Council is dedicated to the preservation and conservation ofour history, and to continuing the tradition of healthy, solid community development ncrr For more than a century, this City has carried the motto "Hand Pluribus Impar" - None More Equal. It is our actions today which will ensure that this motto remains true into the ftiture. Above top:Port dock station yard circa 1930. Above: Central Ferry, Commercial Rjoad,1925.
