RAT DESTRUCTION.
The Board's Ratcatcher (Mr. G. Rhodes) rei)ortcd
as follows:—
392 rats caught.
b,301 traps set (daily average 60.6).
9 gross of I oz. bottles of rat i>oison were issued to the public
free of charge.
LEGAE PROCEEDINGS.
Proceedings were instituted in the Local Court
against two persons for having failed to comply with
orders of the Local Board. One was convicted, and a
fine including costs amounting to £9/3/- was imposed;
the other case was withdrawn, the ofTfender having com
plied with the order prior to the date of hearing.
DEEP DRAINAGE.
The Government has installed sewerage with an
ejectfjr plant at North Birkenhead to drain that area. It
is hoped that a similar system will be installed in the
unscwered area of East Ward.
SURFACE DRAINAGE AND STREET CLEANING.
Lack of funds has materially lessened the desired
attention to these important details. The growth of
grass and long weeds between the tar-dressed portions
of the roads and the footpaths acts as a net to catch
manure, papers, and other rubbish. When finances per
mit, it is hoped that these nuisances will be considerably
abated.
SWAMP LANDS.
These unfortunately, are still in existence, and,
owing to their extent, it is diflicult to do much with them.
