CITY OF PORT ADELAIDE

household refuse, even though it is well-covered, as there
is ample evidence of such reclaimed areas being unfit as
building sites.
GARBAGE COLLECTION AND DESTRUCTION.
The garbage is collected by contract in covered carts,
and this is satisfactory. The method of its disposal by
surface burial is being persisted with, and I still look
forward to the time when this Board will install an
up-to-date garbage incinerator in our midst; to come into
line with other municipalities of similar size in this State
and in the Commonweallh, and to the benefit of public
health generally.
Some years ago I visited Mclljourne and Sydney to
inspect installations in those cities and their suburbs.
I ])repared a long report for this Board and made certain
recommendations. 1 drew attention to the fact that the
feeding of the furnaces that I had
was not very
satisfactory. The reverberatory furnace recently
installed in Hindmarsh has overcome this difficulty. I
understand that W'oodville and Thebarton will shortly
build plants similar to that in Hindmarsh, and I trust
that I'ort .-Vdelaide will soon see its way clear to follow
suit, \\ hen the new Port Adelaide Bridge is an accom
plished fact, perhaps an efficient garbage incinerator of
the type indicated could be installed on a suitable site in
Birkenhead.
SANITARY CONVENIENCES AND BEACH SITES.
These at present are fairly satisfactory. In the City
itself I understand there is a pressing need for sanitary
conveniences for females, somewhere in the vicinity of
the intersection of Commercal Road and St. Vincent
Street. When ])lans for die alteration or addition to the
Town Hall are considered 1 hope that this circumstance
will be favorably considered.
